This lesson welcomes students into the final phase of their Auto-Bot journey. They have built skills piece by piece across Phases I and II, and now they get to bring all of that knowledge together. In this session, students discover what they will build, how each lesson connects, and what it will feel like to turn loose parts into a real autonomous robot. The goal of this lesson is simply excitement, clarity, and confidence. Students walk away knowing what lies ahead and believing that they can do it.
Student Learning Goals
By the end of this lesson students will be able to
• Describe what Phase III is about and what they will accomplish
• Understand the major steps of building an autonomous Auto-Bot
• See how each upcoming lesson fits into the bigger project
• Feel confident and ready to take on the full build
Materials Needed
Nothing special is needed for this lesson
Projector or display for the slides
Notebooks for student reflections
A sample Auto-Bot (optional but helpful)
Teacher Preparation Notes
This is a gentle, welcoming lesson. There is no building or coding today. Your job is simply to walk students through the journey ahead and help them feel proud of how far they’ve already come. It can be helpful to show a completed robot or even just hold up some of the parts they’ll use later. Let students ask questions, share what they remember from previous phases, and imagine what their final robot might do.
If you have students who struggle with confidence, reassure them that Phase III is learned one small step at a time. No one is expected to know everything at the start.
Safety Notes
There are no tool safety concerns in this lesson.
We do however remind students that as we enter a building phase, safety and patience will matter greatly in future lessons.
Warm Up Activity
Ask students
What do you think makes a robot feel alive
Let them share ideas about movement, sensors, or imagination.
Keep this short and light. The goal is simply opening their minds to what they’re about to begin.
Lesson Flow
Step One – Introducing the Final Phase
Show students the overview slide. Explain that they have reached the moment where everything they learned so far will come together. Let them feel the significance of this milestone.
Teacher note: Keep your tone celebratory and encouraging.
Step Two – Walking Through the Roadmap
Explain each upcoming lesson in simple language.
Lesson 02 is about the Codeline Robotics Festival challenge.
Lesson 03 is where they build the Auto-Bot body.
Lesson 04 teaches how the motors and drive system work.
Lesson 05 is where they learn to steer and control movement.
Lesson 06 is building the track-finding sensors.
Lesson 07 connects all the wiring into a complete system.
Lesson 09 teaches the tricks for following the line and preparing for the challenge.
Teacher note: You do not need deep detail today. This is orientation.
Step Three – Reflection and Questions
Invite students to think about which part of the build they are most excited for. Let them name parts that feel confusing too. This helps normalize nervousness and builds confidence.
Step Four – Celebration of Progress
Remind students that they already know more than they realize. They can build circuits, write code, understand inputs, and troubleshoot. Phase III is simply the moment where those pieces finally come together.
Teacher Notes for Slides
Slide: Auto-Bot Overview
Key message
We’ve done a lot of work to get here. Now we’re putting it all together.
Teacher note
Use your own enthusiasm to set the tone. Students follow your energy in this moment.
Slides listing future lessons
Teacher note
Treat this like a story arc. Each lesson is a chapter, and the final chapter is a robot that moves, thinks, and follows a line. Keep the language simple and warm.
Independent or Group Activity
Have students draw a simple sketch of what they imagine their finished Auto-Bot will look like. It doesn’t need to be accurate. The goal is building ownership and excitement for the journey ahead.
Vocabulary and Concepts
Autonomous
A robot that can make decisions on its own using sensors and code.
Phase III
The final stage of the Auto-Bot project where everything comes together.
Festival Challenge
A friendly event where students test their robot on a real track.
Wrap Up
Ask students
What part of this journey are you most excited for
What do you think will be the most satisfying moment of the build
Let students leave feeling energized and ready.
Exit Ticket
Write one thing you are confident about going into Phase III and one thing you hope to learn.
Quiz
This lesson does not require a quiz. If you want one for consistency, here is a gentle version:
- What is the main goal of Phase III
- What is one thing you will build or learn in this phase
- True or False: You are expected to know everything before starting Phase III
- What is the Festival Challenge
- Why do we use sensors on the Auto-Bot
Teacher Reflection
How did students respond to the Phase III overview
Did any students show anxiety about the build
Which parts excited them the most
Note these observations to support them in future lessons.
